Disinformation or Sabotage? Top Channel’s Ethical Collapse
Top Channel’s reckless disinformation has crossed the line from sensationalism to sabotage, endangering the Balkan region with Kremlin-style fear-mongering. Accountability is non-negotiable.
In a shocking display of journalistic malpractice, Albania’s pro-government broadcaster, Top Channel, has sunk to new lows, peddling sensationalist fiction as news. The now infamous headline "ALARM! ‘Albin Kurti Executed?’" is a catastrophic failure of media ethics, and a testament to how far a once-respected outlet can fall when integrity is sacrificed for views and clicks. The headline, suggesting the assassination of Kosovo’s Prime Minister, was not only baseless but recklessly inflammatory, pulling at the fragile threads of Balkan stability in a time of heightened political sensitivity. It’s a classic example of fear-mongering, dressed up as news—a sinister tactic we’ve come to expect from authoritarian regimes, not from outlets purportedly dedicated to democratic accountability.
This is not journalism. It is a textbook case of Russian-style disinformation—designed to disrupt, to inflame, to incite chaos. By irresponsibly amplifying unfounded claims of Kurti's assassination, Top Channel has veered dangerously close to the propaganda tactics used by the Kremlin, which has long specialised in crafting narratives that erode public trust and manipulate fear. Russia perfected this tactic in Ukraine, where disinformation has not only shaped perceptions but contributed directly to the destabilisation of the region. And now, to our collective horror, Top Channel is singing from the same dark hymn sheet.
An Assault on Truth
The headline, grotesquely misleading and utterly devoid of factual basis, is more than just a breach of ethics. It is an assault on the truth itself. In a region historically plagued by disinformation and media manipulation, Top Channel has wilfully thrown gasoline on a smouldering fire. The Albanian public deserves media that serves as a check on power, not as an amplifier for disinformation. To irresponsibly claim that the sitting Prime Minister of Kosovo has been executed—without even the faintest hint of credible sourcing—is journalistic malpractice of the highest order. The International Federation of Journalists' (IFJ) Code of Conduct, which demands that all reporting be accurate and fair, has been blatantly disregarded. Top Channel has, instead, opted for sensationalism, exploiting fear for fleeting relevance.
Let’s be clear: This is not just poor journalism. This is an egregious violation of the core tenets of responsible media. At a time when the Balkan region is politically volatile, such a reckless distortion of reality is nothing short of dangerous. It plays directly into the hands of destabilising actors who thrive on disinformation and division. The consequences of such disinformation campaigns can be catastrophic—undermining public trust in institutions, sowing doubt, and further exacerbating existing tensions.
Russian Playbook: Chaos by Design
For those who have followed Russian media strategies, this playbook is all too familiar. From Moscow to Belgrade, to Budapest and now apparently Tirana, media outlets under government influence have become masters at weaponising fear and uncertainty. The formula is simple: concoct an outrageous headline, offer no supporting evidence, stir public panic, and watch the social fabric tear at the seams. It’s no coincidence that this kind of disinformation campaign mirrors the tactics used by Russian state-run media outlets like RT and Sputnik, who specialise in sowing discord across Europe.
By aligning with these methods, Top Channel has chosen its side. The broadcaster is not serving the public good—it is serving chaos. And in doing so, it is complicit in eroding the democratic foundations of both Albania and Kosovo. As Anne Applebaum would astutely observe, this isn’t just a failure of journalism—it’s a deliberate choice to undermine public discourse and destabilise the region. Top Channel is no longer a news outlet; it is a weapon of disinformation.
A Call for Accountability
This breach of ethics demands immediate action. The Journalists' Associations in both Albania and Kosovo must swiftly and unequivocally condemn this shameless act of editorial misconduct. If these associations fail to rise to the occasion, they will be complicit in the further degradation of media standards across the region. Silence is not an option. The longer the journalistic community remains passive in the face of such blatant abuses, the more normalised disinformation becomes.
Moreover, Albania's media regulators must immediately launch an investigation into Top Channel’s actions. This is not just a journalistic failure; it is a violation of the public trust, and those responsible must be held to account. A significant fine should be levied against the broadcaster for its dangerous disregard for truth and accuracy. Anything less would be an abdication of responsibility by the very institutions designed to safeguard democratic discourse.
And let’s not stop there: any media outlet in Kosovo or Albania that fails to report on and condemn this editorial travesty is complicit. Silence in the face of such a clear violation of journalistic principles is endorsement by omission. We must demand more from our media, especially in times of political uncertainty. The people of Albania and Kosovo deserve outlets that respect their right to accurate, fair, and responsible journalism—not broadcasters that manipulate them with lies and disinformation.
The Stakes
The stakes could not be higher. By failing to call out Top Channel’s egregious behaviour, the broader media community risks allowing disinformation to become the norm, not the exception. This incident is a critical test: do we allow sensationalism and disinformation to go unchecked, or do we demand accountability and integrity? The very future of journalism in the Balkans hangs in the balance.
The Albanian and Kosovar people are not pawns in some geopolitical disinformation game. They deserve to know the truth, untainted by the corrosive agendas of media outlets like Top Channel that prioritise sensationalism over substance. It is time for Top Channel to face the consequences of its irresponsible actions, and for the media community to take a firm stand against this blatant abuse of journalistic power.
If we allow this to slide, if we turn a blind eye to this atrocity, then the disinformation merchants have already won. Top Channel has chosen chaos over truth—now it’s up to the rest of us to choose whether we allow them to get away with it.
This isn’t just a question of journalistic ethics—it’s a battle for the soul of the media itself.

Zeka's transition from politics to media exposes a deep ethical conflict—giving a platform for journalism to a politician with such a controversial history is highly inappropriate and unprofessional. His willingness to exploit this noble profession, known for its commitment to truth, in order to fuel sensationalism and misinformation, erodes the very purpose of journalism itself. Media outlets must remain vigilant against becoming tools for political manipulation, particularly when entrusted to individuals with a record of abusing power.
